Global citizenship Contact with Jaleshwary School, Nepal. One contact we are very proud of and have been involved with over many years is our link with Jaleshwary school in Nepal. A school that is about 3 hours out of the capital in Kathmandu, in a small village called Salang, in Dhading district. Dilys Ellis-Jones has been there on a number of occasions. Pupils here have been supporting the pupils at the school over the years by providing clothes, books, computers, letters and cards also creating books and documents about our community and school. During the winter of 2021 we helped by supporting to buy warm clothes for Kalidevi, Dhading school pupils. One interesting initiative was the foundation phase project, where pupils sold a comic they had created and bought chickens to donate to some of the pupils of Jaleshwary School. Our pupils at Ysgol O.M.Edwards have certainly benefited hugely from this link – as the children learn about different countries, cultures and religions it provides a valuable learning experience which makes it ‘real’ and enjoyable. We have developed a good understanding of how other people around the world live, who lead very different lives to us. We have also benefited a great deal from receiving costumes from Nepal, goods and masks for the children to use and study. The school helped during Nepal's huge Earthquake, in April, 2015 when the country was struck in a staggering way. The pupils were able to watch the crisis on the news on a daily basis and decided to provide support in any way possible. We sent clothes, food, bags and books for the school children. With the development of new technology, it has been much easier for us to contact Mr Hari Tripathi who is part of the Governors of Jaleshwary School to question him about various issues, we have had great Zoom meetings with him from class. The last one was to discuss our work on Diwali/Dashain celebrations.
